Police in Washington DC said three people were killed and three wounded in a shooting outside the Capitol building on Wednesday.
Officers found a man and woman in a vehicle with injuries, Washington police spokesman Dave Loeffler said.
He did not give further details.
The man and the woman were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not yet released the names of the victims.
A police helicopter was seen flying over the scene, with flames rising from the windows of the vehicle, witnesses told CNN affiliate WUSA.
“It appears they were shot from the front window,” LoeFFLER said.
“I don’t know if they were on the ground or not.
It appears they’re still in the vehicle.”
The incident comes as lawmakers and civil rights groups continue to criticize President Donald Trump’s response to the deadly Capitol shooting, with some calling for him to resign.
“We need a strong, independent investigation into the shooting of a police officer in DC, and a thorough and thorough investigation of the circumstances surrounding that shooting, including any criminal charges,” Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio, tweeted Wednesday.
“If the President can’t do this, he needs to resign.”
A vigil was held at the Capitol on Wednesday to mark the third anniversary of the Capitol shooting.
The event included speeches by speakers including Sens.
Elizabeth Warren, D, Massachusetts, and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and the Capitol Police.
